What do you tend to obsess over?
My artwork. It is my weekend passion. Early on Saturdays I drag my easel out to our sunny side porch. I gather tea leaves, salt (which I use in almost every painting) and newspaper articles to use in my multimedia art. Then I splatter my white cargo pants with paint all morning.
Using my film camera I have neat footage of an old train, an oxbow where swans and ice fishermen hang out, and my friend's Apache workshop that she does for kids. I hope to do some filmmaking in the near future. I did some fun independent films with my undergrad buddies. (The wine certainly made it easier).
Now the sketching and film go nicely with my biology research; if I'm on a hike where I can't take my camera, I can rely on my drawing skills to help me identify plants. The filmmaking will be great for my research and showing donors just why my research should be funded :D
Soon I hope to have an art studio. I want it to have a high ceiling and stucco walls. One corner of it will be for my watercolor paintings and one part will be for film. I will have a coffee bar and an old radio at the counter. I also hope to have Sirius Radio in the bar. Of course it will have a lounge area with great couches and a place for my cat to sleep. I hope to have a multi-media theme and have guest artists visit. And I'd love to give you guys a tour when this happens!!
I thought I'd begin my 2009 posts with a kind of wild cat ghost story. ;)
Have you ever dreamed of seeing a beast that hunted alongside woolly mammoths? I'm not referring to some Jurassic park experiment involving saber-toothed tigers. I'm referring to the Scottish wildcat, whose remains have been found in 2 million year-old Pleistocene deposits.
The cat is legendary in Europe. Highland clans were said to fear them. Tales of humans being dragged off by the feline abound to this day, while experts worry that the real chances of actually seeing one diminish every minute.
The species is still clinging to existence but is one of the most endangered felids in the world. Scottish wildcats are Britain's only large land predator. They look like giganticus brown tabby cats, 4 feet long and weighing about 17 pounds of pure muscle. Fewer than 400 individuals remain in the wild.
Now a dedicated group composed of a bronze sculptor, filmmakers, writers and photographers have formed the Scottish Wildcat Foundation. They hope to educate the public on how to save the species. Main threats to the species include habitat loss of coniferous and deciduous forests, followed by hunting and snare traps that are set for rabbits and fox but often catch other animals such as otters and domestic pets.
Greetings!
On this blog I hope to post my short films and other creative efforts. I have just been accepted to a graduate program in conservation biology and I would like to continue my film and watercolor ventures as they relate to the natural world. I hope to feature short films about oxbows, blue herons, ancient cavedrawings, fingerpainting, Apache powows, mystery creatures, people who live in floodplains and meteor showers. Any other suggestions?
In the meantime, please feel free to ponder blue herons.
Have fun!!
