The grace of sawfish

I've never even heard of saw-fish!

Come to think of it I don't remember where I first heard of them - probably one of my science links on My Yahoo page, which I love (BBC, Live Science, updates etc). They stole my heart right away - I am a ray fanatic anyway. ;)

OMG. If I saw that in the water, I'd pee myself. It looks like it could chop you in a million pieces. I hope they live, but very, very far from me.

Aren't they the coolest? Though I would think that if there were any creature that was equipped to get itself out of a fishing line... ;)

Ha - yes I was trying to picture untangling that saw from a fishing line, amputation city! But I've never heard of a single human being getting injured from a sawfish while swimming, sadly not so vice versa. I think at this point it would be a rare event even to see one. ;)

They are so cool, glad you see that too. I'm facinated by them. From what I understand, their saws can only cut large objects, I think the line is too tightly wrapped near the middle to be cut by the sharp stuff.

very interesting. i will post the link to the Florida Museum on

these beautiful creatures seem to be a mixture of shark, ray, and sturgeon!

Thanks so much for that - I'm really compelled by these guys and I might attempt another post on them.

By the way, how did you do that post where you insert the article, I can't figure out how to make that happen.

We should teach them to be underwater carpenters and put them to work.

LMAO - perfect, we could have the mermaid version of Big Brother.

Aren't they amazing? Great information!
Thank you - and yeah I'm really facinated by these guys.
Rays in general are extremely fascinating! Wouldn't you love to see those giant ones (not sure which ones they are) that jump out of the ocean to soar into the sky and then crash back into the water?
I would. After I finish my thesis I plan on travelling to the coast and looking for research opportunities. I don't know how to scuba dive but I would love to work with rays - the zoo I internet at as a vet nurse had a small ray that was so cute and gentle. If I see any opps for people to observe them I'll send you a PM.
Internet - I meant "interned". LOL
Lol! I knew what you meant! My daughter goes crazy for them, too. She will go to those places where you can "pet" them and stand with her arms in the water for the longest time. The rays seem to know she loves them, too.
