On dark rainy days, there's nothing like a strange indie film. Steve's latest post reminded me of Coffee and Cigarettes, a series of vingettes starring a mishmosh of odd characters such as Tom Waits, Bill Murray and Stephen Wright. The scene is a coffee shop where pairs of artsty types sit together for crazy musings.

Characters smoke like chimneys, drink dozens of coffees and sometimes get up and switch places at the table for no apparent reason. It's loads of fun. Shaking hands are mandatory.

"Topics as diverse as caffine popsicles, Paris in the twenties and nicotine as insect repellent" says the synopsis. It's a really fun movie to watch on a cold spring evening.

I'm going to have to put that on the Netflix queue. :)

I think my fave was the Tom Waits scene. Oh, and Cate B. It's not a film I'd recommend to anybody I work with, they'd freak out.

Quite possibly one of my favourite Jim Jarmusch films alongside Dead Man, Down By Law and the Helsinki scene in Night on Earth.

You'll appreiciate it - J and I were in stitches almost the whole time.

Right on those were good scenes. I like the one from the picture and the Bill Murray one (although I've forgotten some of the best scenes by now, I'll have to watch it again)

I quit smoking as well but for some reason I still love to watch people light up, no idea why.

Haven't seen any of those but I suppose I must check them out (have definetly heard of Night on Earth....)

I love Tom Waits! What a scene it would be with that trio. Night on Earth is in my top 10 fav list.

Waits is in a league of his own. Night on Earth....that's beginning to sound awfully familiar, thanks for bringing it up, I'll have to google it.

You'd really like it, it's intelligent and funny all at the same time. (Do you know I watched Sideways, and I thought well that's one of the most depressing movies I"ve ever seen, why would anyone like this film.....and for some unexplained reason I watched it two more times and the third time I realized it-was-funny! I laughed hysterically through the whole thing. Just call me dense, I suppose).

It's a fun movie to watch with friends, you'll love it! I keep hearing about Netflix, many people seem to enjoy it. I'll have to check it out. (Is it online)?

Yes it is an online service netflix.com - we currently have 100 movies in our queue! We are on the cheapest plan though which is one movie at a time - we generally watch 2-3 a month.

I use Netflix, too, and I highly recommend it. We're on a plan that let's us have four movies out at a time.

you'll love down by law and night on earth...(helsinki scene is pretty neat) all favorites of mine (common denominator is mr. waits)

...as Mr Waits did the soundtrack to Night on Earth didn't he? It's hard to get a hold of, too.

Other minor trivia - the guy who plays the taxi driver in the Helsinki scene was the lead singer of the band in Leningrad Cowboys Go America, in which he buys a used car from a salesman played by.... Jim Jarmusch.

mr waits and kathleen brennan (husband and wife, as i recall) ... thanks, you prompted me to take a look, and its not in my CD collection. just found a copy on ebay. bought it.

I have to admit that I like coffee with a stick on my mouth, but cig, I kick the nicotine now, I would like a fake cig instead when it rains, at least it won't extinguish:o

Congrats on the nicotine quitting, I'm a quitter too. I totally dreamed of fake ciggies when I was quitting. Wish they existed.
